Mono-Focus versus Multi-Focus

Selection increasingly focuses on one specific industry, job title or area of experience. This makes profiles easier to compare, but it also has a downside: broad experience can quickly be seen as a lack of specialisation.
In complex organisations, the opposite is often true.
Change, transformation and improvement rarely take place within a single discipline or within the boundaries of one sector. They affect strategy, processes, technology, leadership, collaboration and execution at the same time.
Experience across different industries can therefore be a real strength. People who have worked in multiple sectors are often quicker to recognise recurring patterns, can transfer successful approaches from one environment to another, and are less likely to view challenges only through the lens of established assumptions.
Mono-focus helps us look deeply. Multi-focus helps us see connections.
Both have value. The challenge is to recognise when specialist depth is needed, and when the greater value lies in someone who can connect different perspectives, disciplines and industry experience.
Complex challenges rarely fit neatly within a single job title — or a single industry.
